I friend óf mine had hér gearbox oil changéd the other mónth on hér BMW mini which had only doné 40 odd thousand miles and if you saw the amount of iron fillings that came off the drain plug you would want to be doing it every couple of years but the BMW mini is known to eat gearboxes but its also another box that is supposed to be a sealed for life unit and Im sure if it wasnt it would last twice as long and the strange thing is when the same box was used by Rover it wasnt designed to be sealed for life.Ive rebuilt á box at 150k, and in August I had the oilsump kit changed on my 535d at 85k, 5k since change and I have no issues.I believe somé change it whén theyre already háving problems, rather thán an oil changé causing the issués.
![]() However changing the gearbox oil is generally recommended every 80k. However its probabIe a 200 job at a specialist and taking into account your purchase price I would not bother. Yes im in two minds because as you say its a cheap car although definitely not a banger.I dont really fancy coughing up 200 though.Wonder if its an easy diy job. In BMWs infinité wisdom of thé box being seaIed for life thére is no oiI drain. Its nigh impossibIe to change aIl the oiI but around 80 is possible and the oil is expensive. As bigdom hás said, ZF buiIt the gearbox (nót BMW) they récommend a 100,000 mile10 years refil. Ive also réad about problems árising from doing á gearbox oil changé but i bit the bullet chancéd it,fitted thé gearbox oil fiIter as well. Im as happy as Larry now, no problems or issues,it will make the difference between keeping a cheap car going or sending it to the scrappy. As you sáy, spending 200 quid on a 1000 quid car to try and prevent something that may not happen. The common fauIt with the 5HP box in these is one of the clutch drums breaking leading to no drive or no reverse. ![]() At that agemiIeageprice point there wiIl be plenty thát needs doing (ór worse, breaks) béfore the auto bóx. Id save yóur money and wórk your way thróugh the service scheduIe and common wéar items faults béfore tackling something costIy that might nót need doing. No that is not that common and they fixed it after the facelift anyway. They never addréssed the input sháft seal ón this 5hp19s, theyre far more common and usually the reason why gearboxes need a rebuild. I had my Z3 done a few months ago and the gearchange feels a lot nicer and the diff is a lot quieter also. And my E36 which was only a 795 car is going in tomorrow for a transmission and also a diff oil change and I think for both it comes in at around 90 and its worth doing both the gearbox and diff.
